 Jan Bijl (MSc) Jan Bijl is a Civil Engineer with over 16 years work experience in international development. For most of his professional carreer he has worked in Sub Saharan Africa and spent 10 years in Mozambique. Jan joint OCA in 2008 as an Associate Director.
Over the last 12 years, Jan has worked in various positions as (Chief) Technical Adviser, at the office of the Provincial Engineer and to the Engineering Department of the National Road Administration in Mozambique. He further worked for the Road Training Centre in Mozambique, responsible for the training programme / curriculum development and management of training courses (both formal and on-the-job). At the Road Training Centre, which is also a registered Road Contractor, he has been managing site supervision of contract works on spot improvement, routine maintenance, periodic maintenance and rehabilitation using labour based techniques.
During his time with the International Labour Organisation (with the Southern African Multidisciplinary Advisory Team and ILO/ASIST, Harare, Zimbabwe), special focus of his work was in the sphere of technical backstopping of employment-creating work programmes and rural transport projects, promoting the use of appropriate technology and local resources in infrastructure development and improving accessibility. Lately Jan has worked on various assignments in Africa and the Pacific Region. Jan is an experienced adviser and team builder and is able to create a dynamic work environment aiming at bringing the best out of people. He is proficient in project and personnel management (planning, monitoring and reporting), organisation of meetings, seminar facilitation, training needs analysis and the preparation and delivery of courses.
